Brazil's Vice-Consul [official site says Mr. Costa ie Consul] in Sidney [Sydney]
André Costa says evidence so far indicates that the Australian police was 'irresponsible' in the actions that led to the death of Brazilian student Roberto Laudisio Curti, 21.
Beto, as Costa [Curti, actually] was known, was killed on Sunday after being
shot with Tasers (electroshock guns) by the police of New South Wales, the Australian state of which Sydney is the capital.
Beto was suspected of having stolen a bag of cookies from a convenience
store and fleeing.
His Brazilian friends believe he was killed by mistake.
A witness told "The Sydney Morning Herald" newspaper that Beto was shot
"three or four" times with electroshock guns and pepper-sprayed. The police did not refute the version - and said they will not disclose further details while investigating the case.
"Nothing but irresponsible action has been shown in the press so far.
A single shot is enough to neutralize anyone. But more than one shot can be fatal, especially after being pepper-sprayed, which increases the heat rate," said Vice-Consul [Consul] Costa.
Costa says the case has become 'huge' in Australia, especially due
to the use of electroshock guns, whose risks were debated in the country. In a statement, the Brazilian government said it "deplores" the death.
An independent commission will investigate under what conditions
the death occurred and if there were police errors or abuse of authority, said the New South Wales State Police ombudsman.
Beto's body underwent autopsy; the police did not disclose the cause of death.
Beto's Brazilian friends say he called his sister on Sunday night [he was
killed on Sunday around 5 am. Actually, he called her on Saturday night] seeming unsettled, and said he was being threatened, amidst incoherent sentences.
It was the last time he spoke to his family. There is proof that
he had just left a nightclub with friends.
From then on, reports are unclear: a convenience store employee
said a drunk or drugged youth stormed into the place, speaking incoherently. Unarmed, the youth left with a bag of cookies.
The police approached Beto assuming he was that person; his Brazilian friends
say there is no proof that Beto was in the store.
The police have the store's security camera recordings, which can clarify
the fact, but did not disclose them.
