Monument - for the whole world to see
Today marked the opening of the huge Mindlin Library at the USP capital campus (seven years under construction and still not finished). Yes, the library is not ready, no books there. Just the auditorium is ok, where a rather ostentatious event will run till Thrusday. This rush has a reason: so that the university does not lose the imense personal library Mr. Mindlin donated to USP, under the condition a special place to house it would be created. Year of the deal? 2004. The university totally ran behind schedule. One major newspaper has recently reported that the vast collection is being moved somewhere else, instead of coming straight there. And, poor man, Mr. Mindlin died last year. As a remedy, the widow was present to this afternoon event.
Deep Pocket
USP these days undoubtedly has money to burn. The International Symposium "Books and Universities" - the full name of the event - has brought to São Paulo people from some of the major university publishers. For the event also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Edusp - USP own press.
What matters
So it seems at least a few must have anticipated their votes or are going to the consulate, or will skip voting. Hope Obama wins, though not happy with him. Bin Laden story is hillarious... and the attack that killed Christopher Stevens hurt; was a shame, sheer incompetence. But the alternative looks frightening...
Church's final word in São Paulo
Indeed, Obama would make me feel compensated for the result of our elections for mayor. Most people prefer to think the Catholic Church does not interfere with politics these days. However, I just lived to see what happened to Russomano, the candidate holding a strong 40% of potential votes for the position of São Paulo mayor. Over just one week, the archbishop came to the fore, criticized him and Russomano was 'dead'. Lost the first round. And did not take any side in the second one. Just vanished. Haddad had 5%. Won at the end. No previous political office.
Blood makes Haddad speechless
There is a civil war under way - papers do not put it that way yet. Rather stamp, 'Homicides in the city increased by 86% this month'.
Much of the discourse all around is power-oriented. Our texts, rather, will be appreciated by those brave enough to leave the good life of obedience in order to grow and take risks for the benefit of a multitude of others. Welcome! PORTUGUÊS acesse "apresentação do blog" abaixo
