USP IS LIKE THE VATICAN - SHE HAS ITS OWN LAWS

As we reported yesterday, one of the authorities in a key position, as the Institute for European Studies at USP was being established, declared that `the law here [in Brazil] prevents us from teaching in English`. This was used by the same authority to highlight the fact USP provides Portuguese courses for those coming to Brazil to study. In addition to the harsh comments I have already presented regarding such statement, something else has surfaced: such law would not really exist. In other words, the law is a barrier the units of USP themselves set up. As far as we could investigate, law only determines that the fundamental education be rendered in Portuguese. In sum, this provides grounds for those tough comments. Tough but relevant and more clarifying than we first sensed.
