SNOWDEN IN BRAZIL- WHY IT WENT WRONG

I strongly admire Snowden and Greenwald. But they, along with David Miranda, made the wrong assumptions when trying to obtain a permanent visa for Snowden from the Brazilian government.

Almost certainly, they were fully convinced that was a great move, especially in view of Dilma's speech about espionage and human rights at UN Assembly. But that was actually a misleading clue.

Greenwald has been living in Brazil for a couple of years (since he met David Miranda, as a newspaper tells the story). Even so, and adding the fact he is outstanding at analysing complex matters, no one can handle everything all the time. That is even more the case when one did not have enough time to sink in the situation, pressed by a deadline - here, Snowden's visa expiring date.

Greenwald, who is bound to be the mastermind behind the idea to insist on Brazil, has overlooked at least two crucial facts regarding Dilma's ways. First, Greenwald should have remembered Dilma's position at the Conference on Internet in Dubai, in 2009. Second, Greenwald should have searched about Eduardo Saboia's case and how distant from "human rights discourse" Dilma has reacted to it.

Dilma, it seems, has pretended Snowden did not ask for asylum, while, according to Greenwald's apparent testimony on the Twitter, Snowden, some time ago, definitely did that.

Dilma went to the point of addressing Snowden as "the individual", which is precisely translates as "such a guy" in a very derisively way. That could have been avoided, for the sake of Snowden himself, with better research and less rush.

I am sure Greenwald has learned from this hard lesson.
